Samsung launch Galaxy Z Fold 2

Samsung’s recent Galaxy unpacked event that recently announced the Galaxy Note 20 gave a little hint at the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 2 and promised a full reveal on September 1st. That event has taken a place and we now have the launch details of Samsung newest folding phone/tablet.

Let’s dive right in a take a look at what the new folding device has to offer.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2

The design of the new fold makes some significant changes to last years device. Gone is the large camera cut out from the main display and replaced with a much smaller infinity-o cut out, much like other Samsung devices.

The front display used while the device is closed has now increased to a 6.2” Super AMOLED Display (25:9) with 2260 x 816 resolution. This offers a much more usable display when using the phone without unfolding it. If checking a quick message or replying to a quick email or making a call was possible before, but now browsing the internet, watching a video and even more is easily possible.

The overall design is aluminium with glass on the back. The cover display is is glass, while the main display is mostly plastic with Ultra Thin Glass type layer as Samsung calls it. This provides a better feel when using the display.

The main display is a large 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with 1,768 x 2,208 pixels. It supports HDR10+ and 120Hz refresh rate.

The Hinge

Samsung have updated the hideaway hinge which makes device fordable in the first place and arguable the most important aspect of the devices physical nature; along with the display of course.

The new hinge takes what Samsung learned with the Z Flip smartphone and this now allows the device to fold out and stick in any position by using the CAM mechanism . This advantage also includes software features for when using the device in such a way. Such as putting camera offering controls on one half of the display while the viewfinder is on the other when using the device in a laptop style way.

Samsung are also including their sweeper technology, and by that, they have added bristles between the body and the hinge. Their even smaller this time around compared to the Z Flip when the feature was introduced. Their aim is to keep unwanted particles out of the inside of the device.

Chipset

The chipset included with the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is the Snapdragon 865+ from Qualcomm. This offers Octa-core CPU with (1 x 3.09 GHz Kryo 585 & 3 x 2.42 GHz Kryo 585 & 4 x 1.8 GHz Kryo 585). It also supports Adreno 650 GPU and has 12GB of RAM. Storage options are 256GB and 512GB with no MicroSD slot.

Camera

The camera side of things is more elegant than on the first generation fold device. This time we have 3 main sensors on the rear of the device, a selfie camera on the main display, and finally another selfie camera on the cover display.

The main sensors on the rear of the device include a main 12 MP 1/1.76″/1.8µm sensor with f/1.8 aperture and 26mm (wide) lens. It sports Dual Pixel PDAF and OIS. The next shooter is a is a 12MP 1/3.6″, 1.0µm sensor with f/2.4 aperture and 52mm telephoto lens. It also has PDAF and OIS.

The last of the main camera’s is the 12MP 1.12µm sensor with f/2.2 aperture and 123˚ FoV/12mm lens (ultrawide). While none of the cameras have the huge pixel count as other Samsung’s device, we’re certain their quality will still be top notch as MP count isn’t the main factor.

The selfie camera’s on the same on the cover and main display’s; offering a 10 MP 1.22µm sensor with f/2.2 aperture and 26mm (wide) lens.

Other Specifications

Other specs for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 include WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5, stereo speakers, fingerprint sensor on side power button, 25W wired charging, 15w wireless charging, 4.5w reverse wireless charging. The battery is a 4,500mAh capacity. Dimensions are 159.2 x 128.2 x 6.9 mm when unfolded and 159.2 x 68 x 16.8 mm when folded.
