CES 2021 is getting into full swing and this time we have AMD and CEO Dr Lisa Su and their pre-recorded press event now. The main announcement with this event is the details around Zen3 and Ryzen 5000 mobile chips, which look to offer significant increases in performance and efficiency for the mobile computing market.
Ryzen 5000 series will offer a big leap in performance and battery life for thin/lightweight forms and even higher performance for gaming notebooks but AMD will be pushing a very large range of chips for mobile devices and rightly so as they look to try at take more mobile computing market share from Intel.

The thin and lightweight side of laptops is going to get a rather large uplift in performance and efficiency due to Zen3 and with that battery life was noted as being up to 18 hours normal use, and over 23 hours with movie playback. All that is to say we should see some interesting benchmarks and performance numbers once we get actual devices in the market.
Gaming laptops will also be getting an uplift in performance. The top tier Zen3 mobile chips will offer incredible performance gains for mobile computing. The Ryzen 5900HX and 5980HX will feature 8-cores and 16-threads with 4.6GHz and 4.8GHz boosts respectively. Overclocking is also possible, allowing users to get even more out of it these chips.
This also joins with the announcements of RDNA2 coming to laptops as well. No doubt the performance behind RDNA2 in both the PS5/Xbox Series and AMD Radeons latest 6000 series GPUs will be a huge advantage to gaming laptops and we again are looking forward to seeing actual devices once they enter the market.
The inclusion of RDNA2 could mean we will see a well rounded all AMD gaming laptop with impressive battery life within the first half of 2021.
AMD are also releasing some more Ryzen Desktop CPU’s. The Ryzen 5800 and Ryzen 5900 will offer a much lower 65w TDP with high thread counts. The only caveat with these new chips is the they will be sold only as pre-built/tray style chips, and that they won’t be available directly as standalone CPU’s.
