Sony purchases OnLive cloud gaming service and is shutting it down on April 30th

Sony and OnLive

Reports are just coming in that Sony have purchased OnLive cloud gaming service. Exact details on the deal have yet to be released, but it looks like Sony will be shutting down OnLive on April 30th and current subscriptions will not be renewed and anyone who has already renewed since March 28th will be refunded.

Sony’s purchase of OnLive mainly comes down to it’s patent portfollio and technology. Sony purchased another cloud gaming service called Gaikai back in 2012 and since then have launched their own streaming service called PlayStation Now. Sony have planned to expand PlayStation Now into more territories including Europe soon, and perhaps the purchase of OnLive has them pushing for a bigger audience in the future.

“It is with great sadness that we must bring the OnLive Game Service to a close, Sony is acquiring important parts of OnLive, and their plans don’t include a continuation of the game service in its current form.”
