Samsung’s unpacked 2017 event is currently underway, and their big announcement for their next flagship device is finally here. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ are official. Let’s take a look at what these new devices have to offer.
The biggest change noticeable will be the change in screen ratio, moving from the standard 16:9 to 18.5:9 ratio. This is something Samsung are calling this the infinity display. We have seen this on the G6 from LG.
This takes what the Galaxy S7 Edge/Note 7 did on a much higher level by removing more of the bezel to a point where it’s nearly gone and the curve is more pronounced. Each corner of the display is also curved as well, given even more immersion. The sides curve into the back even more smoothly than they did with the Note 7. Samsung have also done away with a visible home button and have now embedded it behind the display, but still responds to physical touch.
The S8 will include a 5.8-inch display with the S8+ having a larger 6.2-inch display. Both are Super AMOLED with 2,960 x 1, 440 resolution.
Internally the devices will either have Qualcomms newest Snapdragon 835 chipset or Samsung Exynos chipset. So you will either be getting an Octa core 2.3GHz Quad + 1.7GHz Quad or 2.35GHz Quad + 1.9GHz Quad, with both being 64-bit on new 10nm process.
The front of the device has an 8MP auto focus sensor with f/1.7 aperture, and the back has a 12MP Dual Pixel with OIS and f/1.7 aperture.
Other features for the S8/S8+ include 3,000mAh battery on the S8, and 3,500mAh on the S8+. Both will includes Gigabite LTE and WiFi support and the new Bluetooth 5.0 version. Wireless charging is also in tow, and lastly the device of course uses USB type-C.
Samsung will also be launching their voice assistant called Bixby with the S8/S8+, which will of course be similar to other voice assistants we have seen, but is aimed at offering better control and recognition over what you say and wish to do on your phone.
The S8/S8+ will launch on April 29th, with pre-orders arriving 8 days earlier on the 20th. Customers can pre-order the devices in the UK on the 29th of March and will be avaialble up until the 19th of April.
