It was recently reported that SanDisk were looking to be acquired by another company, and Western Digital have stepped up and taken that request. The largest hard drive manufacturer is now set to buy Sandisk and nice hefty $19 Billion price tag. SanDisk is also one of the largest storage manufactures, but their business is flashed based, rather than magnet platter based.
The deal which values SanDisk at $86.50 per share will see Western Digital become even more so the largest storage manufacturer. Sadly this also means less competition in an already limited space. Clearly Western Digital would eventually step into the Flash based storage, but buying out another sadly means less competition.
That all be said, perhaps the combination of R&D of these companies will see some nice future storage options.
