Sony’s track record with smartphone launches has been pretty intense the last few years. Details on what Sony would be bringing to the tablet have stayed behind the curtain. Sony have now shared their new line up of Xperia X devices.
The new devices are dubbed the Xperia XA, X, and finally X performance. Each device will launch with a 5-inch display and that’s where the similar specs really end; mostly due to the XA being at the bottom of the new device. Let’s take a look at the specs of each device and see what Sony will be offering this half of the year.
Xperia XA
- OS: Android 6.0 Marshmallow
- Screen: 5″ Triluminos display, 720p resolution (294ppi)
- Camera: 13MP with 1/3″ sensor; 8MP selfie camera
- Chipset: MediaTek MT6755 (8 Cortex-A53 cores); 2GB of RAM
- Storage: 16GB, expandable with microSD cards
- Battery: 2,300mAh
The Xperia XA comes in with moderate specs. Nothing overwhelms us or jumps off the page, but that’s not the aim of the device. Like the other X devices, the XA will come with a 5-inch display, but a lower 720p resolution. Camera level is also much less compared to the others at 13MP on the back and 8MP on the front. Clearly the XA is meant as a price conservative option. Storage is set at 16GB with a MicroSD slot for expanding.
Xperia X
- OS: Android 6.0 Marshmallow
- Form factor: metal body, beveled screen
- Screen: 5″ Triluminos display, 1080p resolution (441ppi)
- Camera: 23MP/2160p with 1/2.3″ sensor, f/2.0, Predictive Hybrid AF; 13MP selfie camera
- Chipset: Snapdragon 650 (2x A72 + 4x A53 cores); 3GB of RAM
- Storage: 32GB, expandable with microSD cards
- Audio: stereo speakers, Hi-Res audio, DSEE HX, LDAC
- Battery: 2,620mAh
Now we enter into a higher tier and things begin to shine. The Xperia X offers a 5-inch 1080p display, Snapdragon 650 chipset with dual-core A72 and a quad core A53 and 3GB of RAM. Internal storage gets bumped to 32GB, again with a MicroSD slot available.
The camera is the most stand out spec with a 23MP resolution on a 1/2.3″ sensor with f/2.0 aperture. The sensor will use Sony’s Prediction Hybrid Autofocus for tracking a subject for better focusing. The front facing camera is a fairly large 13MP and is said to offer decent low light performance.
Design also takes a leap with a full metal body and beveled display. Audio is an important spec with stereo speakers and high-res audio apart of the package.
Xperia X Performance
- Form factor: metal body, beveled screen; IP68 waterproof rating
- Screen: 5″ Triluminos display, 1080p resolution (441ppi)
- Camera: 23MP/2160p with 1/2.3″ sensor, f/2.0, Predictive Hybrid AF; 13MP selfie camera
- Chipset: Snapdragon 820 (2+2 custom cores); 3GB of RAM
- Storage: 32GB, expandable with microSD cards
- OS: Android 6.0 Marshmallow
- Audio: stereo speakers, Hi-Res audio, DSEE HX, LDAC
- Battery: 2,700mAh
The Xperia X Performance is mostly a flagship device, but Sony aren’t dropping the Z lineup name on this new device. Specs start out with the same 5-inch 1080p display and 23MP camera as the Xperia X. The design is mostly the same with a metal body and bevelled display, but this time we have the Sony traditional water/dust resistance with a solid IP68 rating.
The chipset gets an upgrade to Qualcomms latest Snapdragon 820 wth 3GB o RAM. We have the same stereo speakers, and high quality audio as with the Xperia X. Storage is again 32GB with the MicroSD slot for expansion.
There hasn’t been any details on pricing for the new lineup, but launch window will likely be in the coming months with the XA and X launching first, and the X Performance arriving later.
