Let’s quickly take a look at the test rig before jumping into the actual test results.

The WD connected up directly to 6GB/s SATA III port and the tests begin. The first test we have is using ATTO for raw read/write speeds. The idea here is to directly find out what speed the Velociraptor is capable of and if it meets the stated 200MB/s.
ATTO Disk Benchmark
A simple screenshot for a simple test. The results clearly show that WD were holding back on their speed abilities and the Velociraptor scored pretty handsomely. Reaching a total of 217MB’s write speed and hitting 235MB’s on the read speed. These results surpass the expectations of the drive and show an increased speed of 64 percent compared to its predecessors. This is some improvement and also considering the leap in capacity aswell, there is no doubt that WD were aiming high and had good aim too.
CrystialDiskMark
Now let’s take a look at the results using CrystalDiskMark. This program again will test the write speed in different areas, include sequential read/write aswell as 512K, 4K and 4K QD32.
The test shows similar results in terms of sequential read/write speeds and decent results on the 512K speeds. Now the 4K and 4K(QD32) seem pretty low, but bear in mind that this is a mechanical hard drive and I don’t think anyone should expect it to perform high in those areas.
