Review: HTC One S

Ah the smartphone world, a world in where we can all relate, any geek knows that having a decent smartphone means everything and the best way to determine that is to check the specs, that is why we are here. We are going to check out the specs of the HTC One S and review the entire phone for its performance and see if could be the next smartphone for you.

So, The HTC One S is just one of a three series line up from the HTC One series devices. There is the One X, the One S and the One V. The One X being the most powerful with a quad-core processor and 4.7″ display and the One S being in the middle with a dual core processor and 4.3″ display. The One V is the lower of all three with a single core processor and 3.7″ display

So, now let’s take a look at the HTC One S specifications and see what HTC have to offer in the class of device.

  • Dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait Processor
  • Adreno 225 GPU
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 16GB Storage (plus 25GB Dropbox)
  • 4.3 Inch Super AMOLED 540 x 960 resolution
  • 8 MP rear facing camera with Auto Focus and an LED Flash
  • 1080p video recording @30fps
  • Stereo FM radio
  • WiFi b/g/n
  • Bluetooth v4.0
  • Micro USB with MHL
  • Beats audio

So those aren’t low-end specs, In fact it beats nearly every device on the market except for HTC One X and Galaxy S3. On paper this device has certainly got potential to be a great Android device .

So, is the device slim, HELL YES. The device comes in at 7.8mm thick and is the thinnest device from HTC, but the great part is that this still feels like an extremely well build device and doesn’t feel cheap or two light weight even though it only weighs 119.5mm. The interesting thing here is that we notice a slight flaw in design. The Camera lens being the thickest part of the device and has it sticking out a little. This means that when the device is on it’s back, it will be resting on the camera and this can result in a scratch or worse damage to the lens. It’s pretty bad to see this in such a device and it’s honestly a pretty big slip up by HTC.

The 8MP camera is located in the centre on the back of the device with the LED flash directly beside it. Just below the camera is the nice HTC imprint and below that is the beats audio signature to let everyone know what kind of audio processor it has and of course below that is the speaker.

The device has three capacitive button on the bottom. The back button, the home button and a task switcher button. All the buttons light up and do so using the light sensor built into the device. The only issue I can see with having capacitive buttons on the front is that it means the only way to wake the device is using the power button. This can be annoying sometimes as it can be hard to reach the power button with one hand. This is a small issue but users may experiences it from time to time. Perhaps if it becomes to much of an issue, HTC will allow the volume keys to unlock the screen.

HTC are now using a Super AMOLED display and it is stunning. The screen has a resolution of 540 x 960 which is a dpi of 256. Now the resolution is on the low side compared to some devices, but that being said the screen still looks and performs beautifully.
