It has been rumoured for years, even with the first demonstration of flexible displays arriving at the beginning of the decade. Samsung have finally showcased the Infinity Flex foldable display at their 2018 developer conference.
The quick reveal only lasts a few moments but does give us a great idea of where Samsung is going with the technology. When closed the device resembles a normal smartphone with a display on the front. The difference being when you open the device to reveal the folded display.
The design of the device was mostly hidden with covering over most of the corners and sides. Clearly this is still in the early stages and hasn’t been finalized just yet. The main reason for the showcase was to get development rolling on Android for foldable displays.
Director and Head of Android UX at Google Glen Murphy was present at the conference and announced that Google would be adding native support for foldable display devices for Android. It’s also expected that we will see LG announce a foldable display smartphone at CES.
The unfolded 7.3-inch display gives you much larger real estate without the cumbersome nature of being stuck in tablet mode. Samsung have stated one UI element that allows for 3 apps to be run simultaneously with Multi-Active window.
Samsung have been working onflexible displays for some time, but one of the hardest parts was not onlygetting the quality and brightness up, but also protecting the display, sinceit folds it can’t use the regular gorilla glass to protect it. Samsung spend along time developing a new protective layer with an advanced polymer to be bothflexible and offer significant durability.
We don’t now exactly when the foldable device will arrive, but it has been stated to be launching sometime next year, and the same has been said about LG’s foldable device, which we should see more about early next year at CES 2019.
