Review: Haswell-E 5960X Processor and Intel X99 Chipset

Conclusion

Intel’s latest Extreme processor is here. The 8 Core/16 Thread CPU features 2.6 billion transistors with a 22nm process. If you haven’t assessed just how powerful this processor is from the benchmarks, here is a little refresher. The 5960x at stock is nearly double the performance of the popular 4770k and even more so when we are talking about overclocking results with both processors.

The X99 chipset offers some great advances over the now seemingly now dated X79 chipset. We’re also now moving onto DDR4 Memory as well, which is already providing 3,000MHz+ speeds, but will only get better in the future.

The overclocking capabilities on the 5960x are something of a shock. The 8-core processor overclocks much better then we ever expected, we are really surprised to get close to a 4.5GHz overclock. The Corsair H105 obviously deserves some credit for dealing with heat, and we definitely recommend it or something that performs just as good.  If you plan on getting the 5960x, then we definitely recommend overclocking. The extra performance we got out of this chip is absolutely incredible. That being said, if you settled for stock settings, the 5960x still performs like a beast on steroids.

It’s both easy and difficult to sum up the 5960x. The easy side of things is simply saying it’s amazing and offers the best performance we have seen from a desktop processor. its the fastest 8-core processor available on the market and Intel have done such a good job on this we’re almost afraid of them. The difficult part is really praising the 5960x for just how great it performs. Simple words just don’t seem good enough. We are truly blown away by how impressive the 5960x really is.

To try and do the 5960x justice. Out of all the Extreme Edition processors Intel have released over the years. The 5960x is one of the most impressive and offers a serious jump in performance. While we never reviewed last years 4960X, its performance at the time wasn’t that much above the 3960X from the year before. The 5960x is Intel’s most impressive leap forward in years and we can’t possibly imagine anyone being disappointed. Pricing for the 5960x is exactly as expected and comes in at just under €1000, and instantly some people will think that is way to much. This CPU is aimed at those looking to get the best possible performance and will actually use what it has to offer and for what it can do, €1000 is price we no doubt think a lot of people will be willing to pay.

The 5960x of course gets a GOLD AWARD and short of capitalizing those words, we really wish we could give it something more. It truly is an outstanding piece of computing genuis and if you want the best of the best, then the 5960x is the only option.
